Umtha is committed to the principals of fair trade and sustainable development. For more information about Fair Trade, please visit the International Fair Trade Association's website.
There are 10 standards for Fair Trade.
Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers The majority of Umtha's employees were previously disadvantaged during Apartheid South Africa.
We support the development of economically disadvantaged producers. Umtha buys its ostrich eggshell beads and pendants from APD. APD is an Association for People with Disabilities, situated in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape.
Transparency and accountability We are committed to creating open and transparent channels of communication between management and employees. Employees are involved in decision making that relates specifically to them.
Capacity building Umtha trains employees in skills applicable to the jewellery trade. This training includes jewellery production, quality control, packing and stock management as well as management skills for supervisors. In addition, Umtha has developed a holistic training programme for all employees.
Promoting Fair Trade Umtha informs its customers about the value of fair trade.
Payment of a fair price We pay our employees a fair wage. Employee wages are significantly higher than the minimum wage recommended by the South African government.
Gender Equity Umtha promotes gender equity. The majority of our employees are women. Our women are paid according to the value that they add to the business.
Working conditions Umtha provides safe and healthy working conditions for all employees.
Child Labour Umtha does not employ children.
The environment Umtha is committed to making minimal impact on the environment. We use mainly recyclable and biodegradable packaging materials.
Trade Relations We maintain long term partnerships with our small supplier groups.
